The Lichtwerkstatt is Germany's first Photonics Makerspace where citizens, researchers and companies with an interest in optics and photonics can gain free and easy-to-use access to state-of-the-art technical equipment (including AR/VR, 3D scanning, 3D printing, laser cutting, microelectronics) and the necessary know-how to realize their own ideas. In addition to representatives from companies and science, many dedicated master's degree students from physics, photonics, IT sciences and media management are the main Makerspace users. Thanks to our enthusiastic makers, the Lichtwerkstatt has developed into a vivid space for creative work, sharing knowledge and joint experimentation. We offer permanent access, ideas, workshops, jobs and other opportunities to everyone who approaches us.

Make. Learn. Share.

We are a makerspace at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena de, operating at the intersection of research, industry, and society, and exploring the diverse pathways of knowledge and technology transfer between these fields. As a free resource for members of the university and external enthusiasts alike, we offer a fully equipped workshop, optics laboratory, and an extensive program of workshops. Through numerous initiatives and hackathons, we are continuously working to communicate cutting-edge research from FSU Jena and provide innovative impulses to strengthen Jena’s culture of entrepreneurship. Let’s build something together!

Do you have an idea?

Visit us and join our community of tinkerers, innovators, industry professionals, researchers and curious citizens! The Lichtwerkstatt is an open workshop located in Jena. Anyone with an interest in the natural sciencs is given free access to modern technical equipment as well as the necessary know-how to develop and realize their own ideas. We offer space to experiment together, exchange experiences and find new collaborators. Together with our numerous partners, we offer a range of event formats such as workshops, hackathons and also visits to schools.
