Jena—Hamamatsu Symposium

The partnership between Hamamatsu and Jena spans over two decades, with early initiatives such as Japan’s Regional Industry Tie-Up program and the 2008 Japan–Germany Optoelectronics Symposium establishing a foundation for sustained collaboration. Through ongoing discussions and mutual visits, nanophotonics emerged as a strategically promising area—uniting Jena’s expertise in high-precision nanofabrication and quantum-resolved optical characterization with Hamamatsu’s capabilities in advanced photonic materials synthesis and device-level photonic engineering—forming a complementary framework that bridges fundamental nanophotonics with application-oriented optoelectronic systems.

We are funded by the DAAD and JSPS from 2026 to 2027 for a bilateral joint research project aimed at further strengthening the Jena–Hamamatsu connection. Joint symposia will be held in both Jena and Hamamatsu to anchor the research collaboration in both academic and cultural terms, foster a trust-based network that will outlast the current project funding, and serve as a springboard for future joint proposals and initiatives, including potential industry–academia consortia.
