Friedrich Schiller University Jena awarded University of Excellence status
From Caltech and NASA to the Abbe School of Photonics and his own space-tech company: Master’s student Tanmay Gupta has followed an unusually international path through science, engineering and industry. In Jena, he has found an environment where photonics research and entrepreneurship come together. His story was recently featured by ZEIT Germany.
From 16 to 17 September 2026, the Institute of Applied Physics (IAP) of the University of Jena and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) jointly hosted the international workshop "Photonics in Quantum Computing." More than 100 participants from over 20 countries came together at the Beutenberg Campus for two days of intensive scientific exchange on the future of quantum information technology.
On 16 September 2026, around 60 participants from across Europe came together at the Abbe Center of Photonics (ACP) in Jena for the PHORTIFY Industry Meeting 2026.
Researchers at the University of Jena and the Helmholtz Centre Berlin are using magnetic-field-dependent THz EPR spectroscopy to investigate the environment of switchable iron complexes for the first time
The University of Jena, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF, the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology, the Helmholtz Institute Jena and the Free State of Thuringia are exploring new forms of collaboration.
A new Review in Nature, co-authored by ACP Principal Scientist Dr. Xuemei Gu, explores how AI could fundamentally change the way experiments are designed.
The EMIMEP Summer School 2026 brought together students, researchers, and experts from across Europe for three inspiring days of science, international exchange, and new connections at the Abbe Center of Photonics in Jena.
The award recognizes both the scientific quality of his work and his outstanding presentation to the international audience.
1.8 million euros for international networking and mobility
A special honor for two young researchers from Jena: Dr. Maximilian Weißflog and Paulina Lohbeck from the Institute of Solid State Physics (IFK) participated this year in the 75th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting—the most prestigious interdisciplinary gathering of the international scientific community.
