Imaging of Cellular Processes

Research areas

The research group aims at unraveling the molecular processes contributing to  the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and to its complications (e.g. myocardial infarction and stroke). At the focus of our interest are macrophages, the phagocytic cells of the immune system, and their contribution to the initiation, progression and outcome of the disease. In particular, we want to better understand the molecular signaling pathways and regulatory networks as well as cellular uptake and intracellular transport processes that are involved. A particular aim is to develop imaging techniques and new experimental model systems that allow for improved investigations of these processes. For example, state-of-the-art Raman microscopy and CARS are applied and improved for sensitive monitoring of low-concentrated molecules (e. g. drugs, metabolites) in cells and tissues. All in all, our research aims at increasing our in-depth knowledge about the disease process and at identifying molecular targets that help for developing novel approaches to prevent myocardial infarction and stroke.
