Christian Rüssel was chair for glass chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University and at the Otto Schott Institute of Materials Research for the majority of his long academic life. His primary research interests were devoted to various technical glass types and glass-ceramics, their preparation, structure and properties, and liquid state. His group also explored fundamental studies on glass rheology, glass crystallization, phase separation and thermal behaviour. After a long and meritful academic career, Christian Rüssel became Professor Emeritus in 2018. He published more than 300 peer-revied papers and has a h-index of 28. His legacy at the Otto Schott Institute of Materials Research is taken over by the new glass chemistry chairholder and ACP principal scientist Lothar Wondraczek.
