On 22 August 2012, Federal Minister of Education and Research Annette Schavan announced the program "Zwanzig20 - partnership for innovation". This high-profile cooperative research scheme is aimed at installing new and supporting already existing excellent scientific activities in the Neue Länder. Particular emphasis is placed on strong networking between academia and industry in order to develop innovative solutions and sustainable job opportunities for highly qualified employees. The funding scheme "Zwanzig20" comprises up to € 500 Mio and will span a funding period from 2013 until 2019. The application and selection for funding within "Zwanzig20" is steered and supported by the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) by a highly transparent competition scheme, including a partner database for the formation of new consortia.
During the last years, the ZIK ultra optics "centre for innovation competence" gave proof of the successful implementation of its excellent research results in a broad field of applied science platforms. ZIK ultra optics is one of the main drivers and enablers for the research conducted by the ACP consortium. One of the fundamental advantages of the centre is the region's structural roots in optical research and production providing scientific institutes and industry with a strong pool of qualified employees and unique know-how. ZIK ultra optics has recently adjusted its strategic goals for the next years. Among them, the "Zwanzig20" funding competition was identified as one of the key platforms to strengthen the unique local combination of strong field laser physics and novel nanomaterials for photonic innovations with international impact. An initial consortium comprised of the Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Optics and Precision Engineering and ZIK ultra optics will participate in "Zwanzig20" with the proposal "3Dsensation".
Building on key expertises in dynamic 3D shape measurement techniques and space-time control of optical wavefields, 3Dsensation will tackle solutions for interdisciplinary challenges like 3D environmental detection for automotive mobility, 3D body gesture identification for human-machine interaction, or ultrafast 3D measurement for automatized component production. Moreover, qualification and training of young academics will be triggered within the proposal by the Abbe School of Photonics (ASP). 3Dsensation will include the installation of an interfaculty graduate school providing access to the physics of optical 3D detection schemes. Further focus is put on the acquisition of external experts within 3Dsensation by the prestigious guest professorship program of the ASP.
