On May 15, 2014, Minister of State Christoph Matschie (Thuringian Ministry of Education, Research and Culture) was a guest of honor at the Beutenberg campus in Jena, where the future research building Abbe Center of Photonics is currently evolving in a dynamical way. This building's construction is being funded by the State of Thuringia and the German federal government with more than 24 million Euros. The multifunctional research building will offer 2600 m² space for optical, biological and chemical labs, seminar rooms, offices and a multimedia auditorium. In particular, the new photonics research center will offer a strategic and integrative platform for interdisciplinary exchange by hosting several ACP principal scientists.
With its finalization projected for the second half of 2015, the new building will also allow for the enhanced merging of the Abbe School of Photonics' educational programs with ACP's cutting-edge photonics research. Minister Matschie emphasized that the upgrading of Thuringia's research infrastructure is one key element to maintain its international competitiveness in this sector. "The Abbe Center of Photonics will strengthen Jena's research and its recognition on a national and international scale."
