On July 5, 2016, the new Abbe Center of Photonics building was inaugurated in a public ceremony with more than 250 attendees from science, politics, business as well as colleagues and friends from all over Jena. Prominent speakers were the president of the Friedrich Schiller University, Prof. Walther Rosenthal, the Minister of State, Mr. Bodo Ramelow, the Thuringian Minister of Economy, Science and Digital Society, Mr. Wolfgang Tiefensee and Head of Department for Innovation Strategies of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Mr. Hans-Peter Hiepe. Many interested guests took the chance to have a look into the laboratories, the technical infrastructure, and the office and communication areas. The ceremony and the specifics of the building as well as the opportunities offered for the optics and photonics research and all its partners in Jena and with regard to the international science landscape, were amply reported in the regional media.
