On April 28, 2016, ACP's principal scientists gathered to hold their annual meeting for the first time in their new research building ACP at the Beutenberg campus, taking also a fresh look at the new possibilities offered for research, training and public events.
The meeting was called in by ACP's board of directors who reported on the center's activities and achievements during the last year. 2015 and the beginning of 2016 had seen plenty of event to report about. For example, in May 2015, the regular meeting of ACP's advisory board took place in Jena, which was concluded with a strong recommendation to the University's decision makers to support the extraordinary development of the center. The start of the German-Canadian International Research Training Group 2101 (GRK 2101) in September 2015 was framed with mutual visits of both partners and the involved doctoral students of both countries.
The main topic of the meeting were ACP's members' reports on their progress within small to medium research projects with a high level of innovation and risk, strategic importance as well as an outstanding potential to promote scientific networking, are funded with up to EUR 100,000 each. Already six so-called "ACP Explore projects" were started so far, all running very successfully, and another call will be issued soon. These Explore projects are part of the agenda "ACP2020", which is being funded with EUR 3.9 million within Thuringia's ProExcellence strategy 2014 - 2020. The agenda exhibits a roadmap for ACP's future research, teaching and internationalization directions.
ACP's director Tünnermann also casted a glimpse into the future concerning ACP's involvement with the University's proposals regarding the prospective excellence initiative of the DFG in 2016/17. He further announced the German-Japanese conference LDC' 2016 (5th Laser Display and Lighting Conference 2016), which will take place in Jena in July 2016 for the first time. Moreover, a second ACP-CUDOS workshop with our Australian partners is planned for September 2016, most likely intertwined with the DokDok conference 2016.
