On September 29 and 30, 2014 and for the first time in ACP's history, its principal scientists gathered outside of Jena for a 2-day retreat at the Ringberghotel in Suhl. The strengthening of existing and the establishing of new links inside the ACP community were at the focus of this workshop. The participants discussed novel approaches to pertinent research and educational questions in optics and photonics with special regard to the scientific landscape and perspective of Jena. As one remarkable outcome, a notable number of potential "ACP Explore" project ideas, co-operated by at least two ACP principal scientists with different topical backgrounds, were designed and refined. By this innovative and bottom-up funding approach, the center aims to prepare the grounds for future successful applications in a row of structured research programs of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and of the European Union (EU). A distinct number of "ACP Explore" projects will be founded by the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Research and Culture (TMBWK) within the ProExcellence program 2015 - 2019 acquired by ACP. ACP members are eligible to apply in the first round until November 31, 2014.
