At the end of February 2026, the Abbe School of Photonics welcomed students from across Europe to the Abbe Center of Photonics for the latest edition of the Quantum Ideas Factory 2026. The event brought together around 40 participants for an intensive hackathon focused on developing new ideas in quantum science and technology.
Working in small teams, students spent the weekend exploring a range of research challenges proposed by mentors from academia. The topics covered many areas of modern quantum research. Some teams looked at fundamental questions such as how to build a quantum computer from scratch or how neutral atom arrays can be rearranged for quantum computing. Others challenges focused on advanced topics in quantum physics, including engineering non-classical states of motion using Rydberg physics and detecting d-wave superconductivity in cold-atom simulators. One team also worked on a different kind of challenge: finding new and creative ways to explain the often unintuitive ideas of quantum physics to a broader audience.
Throughout the event, participants exchanged ideas, refined their concepts, and presented their results at the end. The hackathon format encouraged collaboration and of course social activities were also an important part of the program. Participants had the opportunity to explore Jena during a city tour, take a short hike to the LandgrafenExternal link and end the day together over burgers and informal discussions. These moments provided space for networking and helped create a friendly and collaborative atmosphere throughout the weekend.
The Quantum Ideas Factory is organized within the EFEQTExternal link student network as part of the DigiQ initiative, supporting the development of a vibrant European community of young researchers working at the forefront of quantum technologies. Further support was provided by the BMFTR-funded project MINT Makerspace (www.acp.uni-jena.de/mint-makerspace)External linkExternal link, which particularly aims to attract and support young females in the STEM sciences.
