ANU-DVCR Prof. Margaret Harding in Jena to sign a Photonics Dual-PhD-Degree

The Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra have made an important agreement in Jena on September 13. This agreement provides for the future to enable joint doctoral theses that are supervised jointly by both institutions. This Dual PhD program will initially run for eight years. ANU's Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Professor Dr. Margaret Harding has signed the contract in Jena in the presence of FSU's Vice-President for Research, Prof. Dr. Thorsten Heinzel.

The agreement will further support the long-term and trustful cooperation between both Universities. Particularly in optics and photonics, ANU has become ACP's premium scientific partner, accounting for numerous joint research projects, staff exchanges and almost 100 joint publications over the last 15 years. With the Dual PhD Degree, it will be possible for doctoral students of both sides to spend at least one third of their doctoral studies abroad, being co-supervised from a team of Australian and German professors, and in the end obtain a doctoral certificate implying both the German "Dr. rer. nat " and the Australian PhD.
