Positive decision for the Leibniz Center for Photonics in Infection Research (LPI)

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has recently announced to support the establishment of a new Leibniz Research Center in Jena. In the future, technology developers, physicians and medical technology manufacturers will be bringing light-based technologies for a better diagnosis and treatment of infections from the idea to the application on the patient. The Leibniz Center for Photonics in Infection Research (LPI) was one of eleven submitted major projects in the BMBF's national roadmap process. In this way, the ministry certifies the unique research infrastructure in Europe to contribute to the solution of socially relevant topics. LPI will explore new ways to combat infectious diseases, thereby helping to address people's health threats. For this purpose, photonic methods are combined with infection research. Research results are translated directly into clinical practice. This direct application will benefit patients and the medical location of Germany in the long term. For the foundation of the LPI, 150 million EUR are granted.

Research infrastructures are sophisticated and comprehensive instruments or service facilities for cutting-edge research. They are characterized by a high importance for the respective field of science. In the case of research infrastructures, the necessary research policy decisions of the BMBF are systematically prepared in view of the construction period of several years, the long service life, the structure-defining effects and the considerable cost expenditure. To this end, the BMBF has developed a process in which the concepts for new research infrastructures are evaluated according to a uniformly structured procedure.
