ON-SITE REVIEW OF THE CRC PROPOSAL "NOA - NONLINEAR OPTICS DOWN TO ATOMIC SCALES"


On 21st and 22nd of June, many ACP scientists have together defended the CRC proposal "NOA - Nonlinear Optics down to Atomic scales" in front of a peer-review panel and the German Research Foundation (DFG). NOA will focus on exploring fundamental nonlinear processes of light matter interaction in low-dimensional nanostructures, such as atomically thin layers, nanoparticles and -wires, nanostructured surfaces and molecular assemblies. The CRC team further wants to explore quantum phenomena as light-induced tunneling of electrons through metallic nanogaps and field-driven carrier acceleration in plasmonic nanostructures, atomic lattices and 2D-materials and construct new subwavelength-scale materials with tailored high nonlinearity for optical switching and frequency conversion by stacking atomically thin amorphous or crystalline films and employing deep subwavelength field enhancement utilizing nanostructures. The votum of the peer-review panel will be considered at the final meeting of the DFG senate on 22nd May 2019, where a final decision on the funding is made. If funded, the first phase of NOA will commence on the 1st of July 2019.
