On August 25, 2015, federal minister for energy and economic affairs Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) visited the Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Optics and Precision Engineering at the Beutenberg Campus in Jena. The visit was part of a series of encounters and attendances which the minister, together with political allies, currently undertakes.

In Jena, the applied optics and photonics sector, which is particularly business-oriented, was at the focus of Gabriel's visit. Furthermore, new models of the cooperational ties between science and economy as well as human-machine-interactions within future life and working environments were key aspects of the discussions with the local science representatives, such as Prof. Andreas Tünnermann. He explained that intelligent assistants, as already in place e.g. in the automotive and traffic sector, will have a bright future, particularly in industry and trade. During his visit in Jena, Gabriel had the chance to get some impressions on the visionary solutions that scientists are developing for these challenges.
