2nd ACP retreat hold in Suhl

Impression from the ACP retreat 2015, in Suhl.

On September 14 and 15, 2015 and for the second time, ACP's principal scientists gathered outside of Jena for a 2-day retreat at the Ringberghotel in Suhl. The strengthening of existing and the establishing of new links inside the ACP community were one focus of this workshop. The participants discussed novel approaches to pertinent research and educational questions in optics and photonics with special regard to the scientific landscape and perspective of Jena. Particular emphasis was put on developing strategies for future projects and submissions in structured funding schemes of the German Research Foundation (DFG), seeded with a glimpse to the upcoming federal excellence initiative. The optimization of the optics and photonics academic education in Jena was another key point of the meeting, for which fruitful proposals have been found at the retreat.

Moreover, the participants reported on the preliminary results of altogether five ACP Explore projects, which are co-operated by at least two ACP principal scientists with different topical backgrounds. ACP Explore is a bottom-up funding approach, founded by the Thuringian Ministry of Education, Research and Culture (TMBWK) within ACP's ProExcellence program 2015 - 2019. The ACP Explore program is aimed at seeding future successful applications in a row of structured research projects of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and of the European Union. The results obtained so far have been evaluated very positively at the retreat, showing great prospects for the identified sciences cases and topics addressed by ACP.
